I'm hoping to get a horse, but how long will I need to spend on grooming?

Generally, this will take you about three-quarters of an hour every day, once you are used to the routine, but it can take longer at first. Stabled horses will need to be groomed several times during the day, starting with a basic brushing, described as “quartering”, prior to exercise.

The hooves are checked and may need to be picked out using a hoof pick, to remove debris here, and any sponging carried out as necessary at this stage. More lengthy grooming is required when the horse is hot, as scurf will be more evident in the coat. Finally, a light brushing or “brushover” is recommended when the rugs are changed in the evening.
