Many dogs, particularly as they get older, prefer a bean bag. This allows them to stretch out, and is presumably more comfortable if they have any aches or pains in their joints. It is important that a bag of this type has a removable cover however, which can be cleaned regularly before it starts to smell doggy or attracts fleas.

Vacuuming under the bean bag will also help to prevent any build-up of these parasites in the home. If you decide on a bed however, be sure that it too can be cleaned easily, and that the rim is wide enough to let your dog rest his head here comfortably when dozing.
